How brightness works on Windows 10
Windows 10 presents more doors into the same room than its successor does. Knowing which door leads where saves a surprising amount of clicking.
Windows 10 spread its display settings across several generations of interface, and never fully consolidated them. Three separate panels can move the same backlight, and a fourth appears only on portable machines. None of them reaches a monitor plugged into a graphics card.
Action Center
Selecting the speech-bubble icon at the right of the taskbar — or pressing Windows logo key + A — opens Action Center. Along the bottom sit the quick action tiles, and on a laptop one of them is a brightness slider. In earlier builds of Windows 10 this was a tile that stepped through twenty-five per cent increments rather than a continuous slider; if that is what you see, the machine is running an older release.
Settings
The modern page is at Settings › System › Display. The slider sits at the top under Brightness and colour, with the automatic options directly beneath it. This is also where Night light and its schedule are configured.
Windows Mobility Center
A holdover from Windows Vista, and still genuinely useful on laptops. Press Windows logo key + X and choose Mobility Center, or search for it by name. It gathers brightness, volume, battery plan, external display and presentation mode into one small window. For anyone who changes several of those together — before a meeting, for instance — it is the most efficient panel Windows has ever shipped.
Mobility Center appears only on machines Windows classifies as portable. On a desktop it is absent, even if you go looking for the executable.
Power plan brightness
Windows 10 kept a feature that later versions largely retired: separate brightness levels tied to a power plan. Open Control Panel › Hardware and Sound › Power Options, select Change plan settings, and you can set one level for battery and another for mains power. The system applies them automatically when the cable goes in or comes out.
This is the most common reason a Windows 10 laptop appears to dim “by itself” the moment it is unplugged. It is not a fault and it is not adaptive brightness — it is a rule you or the manufacturer set in advance.

Older hardware, older monitors
Machines still running Windows 10 are often paired with screens that are a decade old or more, and that changes the odds in two ways. Older monitors are more likely to ship with the computer-control channel switched off in their own menu, and older panels tend to have a higher floor — their lowest setting is brighter than a modern screen's. If the slider is greyed out
A slider that is visible but frozen almost always points at the display driver. The sequence worth trying, in order:
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. If the entry reads Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the proper driver is not loaded.
- Expand Monitors. If the generic PnP monitor entry is disabled, re-enable it and restart.
- Check for a manufacturer driver through the machine's own support software rather than relying on Windows Update, which often supplies a generic version.
- Restart after any driver change before testing again. Brightness control is registered at start-up.
