Screen Level

Your screen is probably too bright. Here is why, and what to do about it.

Screen Level is a small, independent library of writing about display brightness on Windows: where the controls live, why a desktop monitor behaves so differently from a laptop panel, and how to land on a level your eyes stop noticing.

Start with the scale itself

Before any setting makes sense, it helps to see what a display is actually being asked to do: separate eleven steps of grey, cleanly, from black to white.

A step wedge, the oldest tool in display setup. If the darkest two patches look identical on your screen, brightness and contrast are fighting each other — and no slider position will feel right until that is sorted.
